About the Images

Most of these paintings were created in Italy, in and around the places we lived - Perugia, in Umbria, Marina di Ragusa in Sicily, Verona, and in Vietri sul Mare along the Amalfi Coast. Some were painted en plein air and others from photographs.

Since returning to the states I have continued to use Bob's and my photographs to create images based on that experience. I'm not trying to achieve a realistic rendering, but an impression, the essence of the place.

My style of painting in Italy was to use a waterproof PITT pen to create a line drawing and then build up the painting with layers of translucent watercolor. I especially enjoyed finding layers of crumbling paint on buildings in these charming cities and towns - walls, windows and doors that reveal the passage of time and human exisitence.

I try in my work to capture a moment in time and evoke an emotion in the viewer - a longing to be in that place, a sense of what it must have been like to stand where I stood on that particular day.
